An image has been released that shows a lonely lunar boulder that rolled across the moon’s surface between 50 and 100 million years ago. Despite a seemingly fresh trail showing its path as it trundled down the sloping central peak complex of the Schiller crater, the 9-metre diameter rock finished its 500 metre journey a long time ago. The image was captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LRO) and is thought to show a boulder that may have been displaced by a nearby ground-shaking meteoroid impact.
