Today in History: On January 15, 1929 Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a Baptist minister and NAACP organizer. In 1934, the family traveled to Germany where his father added the name “Luther” to his own as well as his son’s to honor Martin Luther. Dr. King would go on to to become an influential figure in the civil rights movement, first gaining national attention for his role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. Dr. King would later be killed in Memphis on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39.
