Maternal Death and African-American Women: Alarming Study (via robot-heart-politics)

The unit about WoC in my Women’s Studies class featured a similar study that found that African American women across all socioeconomic statuses are more likely than white women to deliver premature babies. In fact, the study eventually found that in the case of women moving to the US from countries in which they are not a racial minority, mothers would rarely experience premature delivery before the move, but within a few years of living here, would be more likely to.

Racism can directly affect the way WoC receive prenatal care, but it also affects a person throughout their entire life in the form of physical stress. That stress has real consequences on the mind and body, and I’m sure this is only one of the ways it manifests.
