Quote 11 Aug 7 notes
The only reason that the zombie-eyed granny-starver Paul Ryan gets to present his own federal budget, as though he were the shadow president and not a guy elected by roughly 180,000 people in and around Janesville, Wisconsin, is that he managed early on to convince people that he was not your run-of-the-mill zombie-eyed, granny-starving, trickle-down Randian snake-oil salesman of the kind that have been running Republican economic policy since half-past Ronald Reagan’s lucidity. No, indeed. Ryan was a Serious Man Of Public Policy, interested only in disinterested pursuit of answers to the country’s pressing economic needs. You might disagree with him, we were told, but you can’t dispute the fact that the man knows his stuff. Even liberal wonks found themselves charmed by Ryan’s charts and graphs, all of which, remarkably, came to the same conclusions that a generation of conservative fiscal cranks had been proposing for 30 years. Shift the country’s wealth upward and soak the poor and the middle class. Create a functional oligarchy in the national economy and lay in sufficient budgetary traps and snares that the oligarchy you have created is unassailable in the future.

If Paul Ryan is Mittens’ VP pick, I just want to remind everyone that Charles Pierce’s nickname for Ryan is “zombie-eyed granny-starver”. It’s catchy, makes proper use of a hyphenated adjective, and I hope it sticks.

Also, if the pick really is coming shortly after the asscrack of dawn tomorrow, when  conservatives and liberals alike will either be trying their damnedest to sleep in, or out for a hike/run/jog, or embarking on the time-honored tradition of the Walk of Shame, well, it’s an odd choice. It’s only a few hours removed from the classic Friday Evening Info Dump:  aka, we’re releasing information but hope no one notices and it all blows over by Monday.

I’m not saying Romney’s campaign staff are media-illiterate morons, but you’d think a man who was allegedly business savvy and worth at least a quarter of a billion dollars could come up with a better media/PR strategy for the last “good surprise” his campaign can mount.

I was trying to remember who came up with that name.

Regarding the timing of the decision, I think Obama announced his Biden pick on a Saturday morning in 2008. Announcing a VP pick on a Saturday could just be a way of getting some media attention on an otherwise-quiet news day. Plus it gives networks an excuse to give Paul Ryan extra coverage on the Sunday morning talk shows.
