What the Onion has done here is translate announcements about new social “things” into how most people end up reading them.
It’s a subtle reminder that most people’s media habits take time to change. While there is still plenty of room to innovate around creation and distribution of content (Branch and Medium are examples of exciting new “things”), there is always value in focusing on communicating clearly with a consistent voice. If you nail that down, you’ll be ready for whatever new thing comes next.
