Sawfly Larva (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) The larva of many sawflies (which are in fact wasps) look very similar to Lepidopteran (butterfly and moth) caterpillars. The main differences are the numbers of prolegs and eyes. Apart from the 3 pairs of jointed forelegs, the Symphyta have six to eight pairs of fleshy prolegs whereas butterfly and moth caterpillars only have five pairs.
